Giuseppe Iannone, 67 year old entrepreneur from San Cipriano d'Aversa, in the province of Caserta, was acquitted by the preliminary investigations judge of the Naples court from the charges of external competition with the Camorra, extortion, fraudulent transfer of assets and use of money of illicit origin.
Article Key Points
Iannone was arrested in July 2021 by the Naples DDA, which considered him the "dominus" of Enel contracts in the Caserta area on behalf of the clan of Casale.
The DDA had requested a 10-year prison sentence for him, based on the statements of important collaborators of justice such as Nicola Schiavone and Giuseppe Misso, who had spoken of a historic relationship between Iannone and the leaders of the Casalesi clan.
Judge Antonio Baldassarre, however, deemed that the evidence against Iannone was not sufficient to convict him.
For the Naples DDA, Giuseppe Iannone was the "dominus" of Enel contracts in the province of Caserta
In particular, the judge noted that the statements of the collaborators of justice were “generic and unsubstantiated” and which were not supported by objective elements.
The judge also underlined that Iannone's position as a "monopolist" of Enel contracts in the Caserta area was not necessarily attributable to relations with the Casalesi clan, but could also be explained by other factors, such as his experience and professionalism.
