Moments of terror yesterday afternoon in the prison of Spini di Gardolo, in Trentino Alto Adige, where a 40-year-old inmate brutally attacked his wife during an interview.
The man, who had already been in prison for a year for assaulting his wife, slashed her face with two razor blades and then tried to cut her throat, risking severing her carotid artery.
The violent episode occurred around 17:00 PM during a conversation between the man, of Tunisian origin, and his wife, a 44-year-old Italian woman. It seemed like a calm meeting, but in a few moments the man lunged at the woman with the razor blades. She was lucky, because the razor blades did not cut her carotid artery, but her face was scarred.
The fury did not subside and the man attempted to cut her throat, only thanks to the timely intervention of the prison police officers the worst was avoided.
The woman, assisted by prison staff and 112, was taken by ambulance to the Santa Chiara hospital in Trento. Her condition is not serious, but she is in shock over what happened. The attacker was arrested and will be tried this morning for attempted murder.
The reasons for the act are still unclear. The couple, who have no children, had already had problems in the past. The man was already in prison for assaulting his wife.
The episode has caused dismay within the prison. The prison police unions have long been denouncing the lack of personnel, with 160 officers compared to the 227 planned and an increasing number of inmates (380 against the 240 planned). The chronic lack of personnel, according to the unions, puts the safety of both the inmates and the officers themselves at risk.
The Trento Public Prosecutor's Office has opened a case for attempted murder and has begun investigations to clarify the facts. The man has been arrested and is now at the disposal of the judicial authorities.
