A new jewel in the crown for the Hospital Santobono of Naples: the brand new Pediatric Burns Center was inaugurated today, a unique excellence in Italy for cutting-edge technologies and techniques. A milestone that represents a fundamental step for the care of young patients from Campania, who will no longer have to travel outside the region to receive the necessary care.
The inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of the President of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca, who expressed great satisfaction for the creation of this new department: "There was no major burns center for children in Campania and this is one of the achievements that makes us most proud. Today we are creating a cutting-edge center that I am sure will bring great relief and satisfaction to all our fellow citizens".
The Santobono Pediatric Burns Center stands out for its high level of technology and for its equipment of cutting-edge devices. A jewel in the crown that represents a point of reference not only for Campania, but for the entire country.
Burns are the third leading cause of death in children and their treatment requires a complex and specialized approach. The new Santobono center is able to offer young patients the best care, guaranteeing them a complete and personalized treatment path.
Numbers that testify to the commitment
Between 2022 and 2023, Santobono has already treated 120 children with burns, 70% of whom had severe or very severe burns. A commitment that translates into concrete numbers: 80% of hospitalizations are surgical and last an average of 15 days.
Santobono's commitment is not limited to treatment, but also extends to the field of research and innovation. Since 2021, in collaboration with Cutiss and the University of Zurich, the hospital has been the reference center for Italy for a cutting-edge clinical study testing the use of bioengineered autologous skin in the treatment of severe burns.
Santobono is the only Italian pediatric center participating in the study and is the center that has performed the largest number of grafts in Italy. Furthermore, it performed the first transplant in the world of bioengineered autologous skin in a newborn.
The new Santobono Pediatric Burns Center represents excellence in the service of the Campania region and the entire country. A milestone that confirms the hospital's commitment to caring for young patients and finding innovative solutions to improve their quality of life.
