The contemporary staging of Sophocles' immortal work "Antigone", in the form of an innovative web series, is preparing for its national debut. The bold project is the result of the joint efforts of students from the "Pietro Giannone" High School and the "Dante Alighieri" Comprehensive Institute of Caserta, who have given new life to this Greek tragedy, exploring themes such as civil resistance and female affirmation in a male-dominated society.
The Renewed 'Antigone': A Student Web Series
The online series is presented under the sign of an impressive collaboration and dedication of the students of the two schools of Caserta, who invested over 150 hours in the production of four episodes, each of just over five minutes. The students enjoyed an intensive period of preparation, including film workshops and professionalizing sessions in various aspects of film creation—from screenwriting to directing, from acting to photography, guided by experts in the field such as director Lorenzo Cammisa and director of photography Domenico Fontanella.
Partners and Supporters of the Project
The young filmmakers benefited not only from hands-on learning, but also from professional tools and skills provided by entities such as Sly Production srl and Stigma srl, counting on multifaceted support to bring their artistic vision to fruition. Key contributors to the project include the Regional Committee Asi of Campania aps and the Università Popolare per lo Sport e il Terzo Settore asd aps.
An Ancient Story for a Modern Audience
The web series 'Antigone' was conceived with the aim of bridging the gap between antiquity and today, resonating with modern and universal themes through a language close to that of the appreciated TV series on crime. The timeless message of Sophocles, focused on love against tyranny and moral conflicts, is reinterpreted by the ninety students involved, bringing the ancient narrative back into a context that challenges gender stereotypes and violence.
A Message of Love and Resistance
Within the series, Antigone's silent resistance against Creon's oppressive power emanates a powerful message: it is love, not hate, that should guide human actions. In this way, the web series not only becomes a renewed symbol of civil rebellion but also a tribute to female empowerment, exploring how dignity can emerge against adversity.
