After almost three months of house arrest, this morning John Toti he resigned as president of the Liguria Region, delivering an irrevocable letter of resignation written by hand, through the councilor Giacomo Raul Giampedrone, to the protocol office.
Toti is under house arrest on charges of corruption: according to investigations, he received bribes in exchange for favors, such as the concession of port spaces in Genoa.
“I would have liked to have a different approach to our territory, to the many mayors and administrators with whom we have shared projects, the friends who have supported me in two decades of tireless work, the political forces that have supported this experience.
It has not been possible to do so, but I am confident that it will be in the near future,” writes All in an open letter delivered to his lawyer.
Regional elections will now likely be held in the fall, while Toti's resignation could facilitate the revocation of house arrest and speed up the judicial process.
Toti always writes: “A new phase is opening up for everyone: the voters have the task of judging the Liguria that we have built together over these long years and deciding whether to continue on this path.
The majority parties have the responsibility to proudly valorize the results achieved, not to betray the consensus gathered, valorize the ruling class grown in the territory.”
Solidarity with the now ex-governor comes from Micaela Biancofiore: “Forcing a democratically elected governor to choose between freedom and resignation is as far from the concept of a Western democracy as possible: a disturbing affair, inconceivable in a state of law.”
In the centre-left, however, they are already looking towards elections: “Toti's resignation was a politically necessary act due to the failure of his policies which led his Region to see essential rights and benefits compromised,” he pressed Angelo Bonelli of Avs.
"From public health to transportation, with a strong attack on the environment. Now let's stay united to win the elections and to build a Liguria that respects the territory, the environment, participation and democracy."
