A potential tragedy was avoided in Mercogliano, in the province of Avellino, where a devastating fire broke out in the early afternoon on the second floor of a building in Via Matteotti.
The firefighters, who intervened promptly with two teams, a fire truck and a ladder truck, immediately began extinguishing operations and the evacuation of the six resident families.
Rescue operations were particularly delicate for an elderly couple and their assistant, trapped on the third floor due to toxic fumes that pervaded the building.
Two 118 ambulances, present on site, provided assistance to residents, including some with disabilities, without however requiring hospitalization.
The damage to the building is considerable. The Carabinieri are conducting investigations and are awaiting the technical report from the fire brigade to determine the causes of the fire.
