U.S. Alarm: Escherichia coli Outbreak Linked to McDonald's Worsens. The number of cases of Escherichia coli infection, linked to the consumption of Quarter Pounder hamburgers at McDonald's restaurants, continues to skyrocket in the United States.
To date, 75 people have been infected, including 22 hospitalized and unfortunately one death. Since October 22, the day the CDC first reported it, 26 new cases have been added (12 with hospitalization) and 3 more states have been affected, the federal agency reports.
In total, there are 75 infected people in 13 states; 22 patients have been hospitalized, including 1 death in Colorado, already reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the first update. In addition to the child in the hospital with complications from hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), another case of HUS has been found in a hospitalized adult. The most recent date of onset of illness is October 10.
Health authorities are increasingly focusing their investigations on the fresh sliced onions used in the famous sandwich. Despite the recall of the suspect batches by the supplier, the outbreak appears to be still expanding, now involving 21 American states.
The appeal is addressed to all consumers: in case of suspicious symptoms after consuming products McDonald's, it is essential to contact your doctor immediately. Health authorities also recommend paying attention to official announcements and avoiding the consumption of products subject to recall.
