Residents and merchants rejoice after the decision by the Municipality of Naples to block the pedestrianization of a part of Piazza degli Artisti, in the Arenella neighborhood. The measure, which had limited vehicular traffic, had sparked strong protests due to the negative repercussions on the daily lives of citizens and on the local economy.
The City Council's transparency commission, meeting to discuss the issue, highlighted the serious problems of traffic congestion and pollution caused by pedestrianization. The decision to suspend the project comes after numerous complaints from citizens and the lack of a preliminary public consultation.
Gennaro New Year, president of the Comitato Valori collinari, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the affair, underlining how the pedestrianization had caused significant inconvenience to residents, in particular due to the lack of parking. Capodanno also criticized the municipal administration's choices regarding traffic, judging them to be "tentative" and ineffective.
The commercial activities in the area have been significantly affected by the pedestrianization, recording a drop in sales due to the difficulty of access for customers, both by private and public transport. Some shops have even decided to close.
