Ten railway stations in the South have been redeveloped thanks to the interventions of Rfi (Gruppo Fs Italiane) foreseen by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The modernization works of the first ten railway stations in the South have been completed on schedule. The works, financed with approximately 50 million euros, involved the redevelopment and improvement of the accessibility of the stations, with the aim of increasing the quality of services and comfort for travellers, in line with the European norms and regulations on the matter.
The ten stations affected by the interventions are: Abruzzo: Vasto San Salvo; Calabria: Scalea – San Domenica Talao; Calabria: Vibo Valentia – Pizzo; Campania: Falciano-Mondragone-Carinola; Campania: Sapri; Puglia: Giovinazzo; Puglia: San Severo; Sardinia: Macomer; Sardinia: Oristano; Sicily: Milazzo. The interventions involved both the internal and external spaces of the stations, improving accessibility for travellers, the quality of the services offered, and the comfort and safety of public areas.
In total, 20 Temporary Groupings of Companies were involved in the execution of the works. The works are now continuing on the remaining 20 stations and the eight railway hubs in Southern Italy (Villa San Giovanni, Messina Centrale-Messina Marittima, Benevento, Caserta, Bari, Taranto, Lecce and the stations of Line 2 of the Naples metro), with completion expected by 2026.
These interventions are an integral part of the FS Italiane Group's plan to improve accessibility, modernize railway infrastructure and contribute to the country's sustainable development. RFI continues to invest in Southern Italy with interventions aimed at enhancing its infrastructure assets, while improving the travel experience for the millions of users who pass through Italian railway stations every year.
