Salerno – Sessa Aurunca. Lorenzo Bertanelli, 36, an employee of the Mecline company, lost his life in an accident during maintenance work on a vessel in Dock 2 of the Naval Repairs facility, an Amico shipyard in Molo Giano, in the port of Genoa.

The man originally from the province of Salerno, who had ties with Sessa Aurunca, was the victim of a dramatic accident while he was at work.

During the operation, a large propeller, part of the thruster system, suddenly became unbalanced, overwhelming Bertonelli. Despite prompt rescue, the 36-year-old did not survive. A colleague present on the scene was instead hospitalized in shock.

The authorities have started investigations to clarify the exact dynamics of the accident. The judiciary, together with the inspectors of the ASL3, have acquired the footage from the surveillance cameras and the documentation relating to the construction site. The autopsy, scheduled for Saturday, will help to reconstruct in detail what happened.

Originally from the province of Salerno, Bertonelli leaves behind a minor son and an ex-wife living in Sessa Aurunca. The tragic event has caused great indignation: the unions of the metalworking sector, denouncing the high number of accidents in Ligurian construction sites, have called a strike to demand greater safety in the workplace.

Political institutions have also expressed their condolences, urging urgent interventions to strengthen measures to protect workers in the ship repair sector.
