Castel Volturno stopped today to remember Mimmo Noviello, the entrepreneur who in 2001 said no to the Casalesi racket and paid with his life in 2008. A sober but meaningful commemoration, organized by the Italian Anti-Racket Federation in the very place where the Camorra wanted to snuff out a free voice. But that voice, today, continues to be heard louder than ever.
Massimiliano Noviello, Mimmo's son and president of the local Fai, described what it meant, then, to be alone against a deep-rooted mafia system. “My father did not accept the mafia compromise, he chose freedom and dignity. At the time he was alone. Today, thanks to the institutions, the police and associations like Fai, no one is anymore”.
After the commemoration, the institutions met in the council chamber of the Municipality, where they answered questions from the students of the Isis “Vincenzo Corrado”. A debate moderated by the national president of Dai, Luigi Ferrucci, and enriched by the interventions of those who fight crime every day with the culture of legality: Rosario D'Angelo of Fai Campania, Simmaco Perillo of Libera Caserta and Alessandro Buffardi of the Don Peppe Diana committee.
Government Commissioner Maria Grazia Nicolò underlined the fundamental role of anti-racket associations, which today accompany victims throughout the entire process of reporting and rebirth. A protection network that is combined with the continuous presence of the State, as reiterated also by the regional commissioner Santi Giuffrè and the prefect of Caserta Lucia Volpe: “Networking and building a wall with citizens is the only way – said the prefect – to make people understand that the State is there, and that today no one should feel alone anymore".
