Elderly Man Announces Suicide in Letter to Municipality, Saved by Carabinieri
A moment of despair over his health conditions, aggravated by the loneliness imposed by the pandemic, led to a 80enne to attempt to take his own life, after having delivered a letter in a sealed envelope to the offices of the municipality of Villamaina, in the province of AVELLINO, in which he announced his suicide.
The pensioner immediately stopped in the gardens near the town hall and cut himself in the neck with a knife. The intervention of the Carabinieri, alerted by the town employees, who disarmed him, was providential. Immediately rescued, he was transported by 118 to the “Moscati” hospital in AVELLINO and after the appropriate treatment he was discharged.
“Marshal, I did something stupid. I apologize to everyone”: these are his words, addressed to the commander of the Carabinieri station, after leaving the hospital. The mayor, Stefania Di Cicilia, asked for the intervention of social services to alleviate the conditions of “a person - she said - good and well-liked by everyone”
