The Archbishop of Naples: “Pain and indignation for the events in Torre Annunziata”
“Pain and indignation accompany the news related to the killing of Maurizio Cerrato, for the brutal attack he suffered in Torre Annunziata on the evening of April 19th while he was trying to help his daughter Maria Adriana, 'guilty' of having parked her car in a 'reserved' space. The indignation is for the perpetuation of crimes, violence, abuses sanctioned by an abusive code of law by virtue of which a handful of bullies allow themselves to condemn those who day by day, with simplicity and a sense of duty, try to live their lives, in compliance with healthy and holy human and civil coexistence".
He declares it the archbishop of Naples, Don Mimmo Battaglia. “The pain – he adds – becomes suffrage for the soul of Maurizio and compassion for his family and for the entire community of Torre Annunziata. Our closeness and our commitment to the family. Human pity cannot be enough and does not do justice to an innocent victim, it is right to recognize in the victim a father committed to helping without violence. Hope, however, cannot fail.
Hope in the institutions, which are called to do their part, overcoming the temptation of easy consensus, hope in civil society so that it does not give in to forms of surrender or even worse, omertà, hope in the ecclesial community so that it does not give in to pessimism, but invites us to increasingly anchor our faith in Jesus who is capable of making all things new. In this very serious moment, let us entrust ourselves to our Mother so that she may dry our tears and fill our hearts with consolation”, concludes Don Mimmo Battaglia.
