The IdeaScuola National Committee asks for clarifications on the use of FFP2 in schools and on the safety protocol
The National Committee IdeaSchool, composed of parents and teachers with the support of representatives of the academic and medical world, formally requests the Government and the competent Ministries for urgent clarifications regarding what was stated in the minutes no. 10 of 21 April 2021 by the CTS as reported in Note no. 698 of 6 May 2021 of the Ministry of Education on the 'not recommended' use of FFP2 masks in the classroom and on the repeated validity of the safety protocols established in August 2020.
In particular, regarding the use of FFP2 masks, this Note reports the contrary opinion of the Scientific Technical Committee (with minutes no. 10 of 21 April 2021), regarding the hypothesis of prescribing the use of such devices
protection for students, indicating that prolonged use is 'not advisable'. However, the need to use masks in school premises in primary and secondary schools of I and II level remains.
Furthermore, regarding the Safety Protocols, the Technical Scientific Committee suggests continuing to adhere to the Protocols already approved. Therefore, schools will have to continue to apply the provisions currently in force regarding the use of surgical masks by students, maintaining social distancing, ventilation of rooms and hand hygiene established at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year when the epidemic picture was completely different from the current one.
Considering that:
● since March 2021, the prevalence of the so-called "English variant" of the virus has been observed in Italy
Sars-CoV-2 which is more contagious and which according to the opinion of authoritative scholars requires the use of masks
FFP2 in all closed environments, in light of the proven spread of the virus via aerosol;
● that the safety protocol currently in force in schools dates back to August 2020 and, despite
the epidemic picture has changed considerably and has never been updated;
● that, to date, the contagion data in schools are not yet known in detail and it is
It is essential to understand the context and circumstances in which the virus has spread most, to understand
what are the most appropriate security measures to adopt.
The IdeaScuola National Committee, representing numerous teachers and parents of students and pupils from all over Italy,
has submitted a formal request for urgent and necessary clarification on the following points:
– use of FFP2 masks by pupils and students in school environments;
– use of such protective devices (FFP2) by teaching and non-teaching staff;
– opportunity to continue to comply with the Safety Protocols established in August 2020.
The IdeaScuola National Committee, which has always been attentive to the issue of safety, in light of what is summarily reported in the minutes of the CTS n. 10 of 21 April 2021 to which the Note refers, believes it is essential to obtain some
detailed and timely clarifications regarding the most appropriate methods and rules of coexistence to be adopted within the school premises, to avoid possible outbreaks.
