Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Violence in prison: Review begins for two officials placed under house arrest for the mistreatment of April 6, 2020.
The hearing before the Naples Review Court is scheduled for tomorrow morning for the two officials who led the Penitentiary Police teams on duty on 6 April last year in the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison, when the violence against the inmates of the Nilo section took place.
Gaetano Manganelli, 45, then commander of the agents in the Caserta institute, and 53-year-old Pasquale Colucci, commander of the Secondigliano penitentiary police and of the Intervention Support Group – both recipients of a precautionary custody order under house arrest – have asked for the revocation of the precautionary measure.
It was precisely from the Neapolitan institute of Secondigliano that a third of the 300 agents sent for the extraordinary search of the Nilo section arrived at the prison of Santa Maria Capua Vetere. An operation deemed illegitimate by the Prosecutor's Office and then became, as written by the investigating judge of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, "a horrible massacre". Almost none of the Secondigliano agents were identified during the investigations of the Prosecutor's Office led by Maria Antonietta Troncone with the addition of Alessandro Milita.
In fact, everyone was wearing a helmet and an anti-Covid mask, so the ones who were recognized were mainly the officers from the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison. Manganelli had already defended himself during the interrogation given to the investigating judge after his arrest, claiming that he was not among those who “managed, directed and organized the search”, essentially placing the blame on the other officials present, including Colucci who in recent days was questioned by the Prosecutor's Office who asked him to identify some of the unknown officers from Secondigliano. Manganelli's lawyer Giuseppe Stellato has prepared a detailed defense to contest the most serious charge, that of failure to control the officers, and to reiterate that Manganelli never appeared in the internal images of the prison. Pasquale Colucci's defense, represented by lawyers Carlo De Benedictis and Domenico Scarpone, will ask for the order to be annulled due to a lack of serious evidence.
