They picked mushrooms in the gardens of the Monaldi hospital in Naples. They cooked them and then ate them. But shortly after, stomach cramps, excruciating pain. So five members of a family arrived in red code at the Cardarelli hospital.
A 92-year-old woman has died, and four other relatives of hers are hospitalized for serious poisoning. The ASL Napoli 1 has ordered the dispatch of inspectors who will have to verify what happened and in the meantime signs have been put up prohibiting the collection of the incriminated mushrooms.
Two are in intensive care. Two others are in conditions that do not cause concern. All five belong to a single family unit. One of them - as reported to the health workers who took care of them - went on Friday to the area behind the 'Monaldi' hospital in Naples (which is located on the Camaldoli hill, where there are beech, chestnut and Mediterranean pine trees) and collected some mushrooms.
They would have appeared after the heavy rains of the past few days. Mushrooms that looked like honey mushrooms and that they would have consumed yesterday. During the night, however, they felt ill. There was nothing that could be done for the elderly woman: the other four were hospitalized.
The four hospitalized patients have undergone all the tests. And in the meantime, they are checking whether other people have collected the mushrooms that were later found to be poisonous. The general director of the ASL Napoli 1, Ciro Verdoliva, in a note invites not to consume mushrooms collected without first having them examined by the Food Hygiene Operations Unit of the Prevention Department of the health company.
