As part of the territorial control activities carried out throughout the summer period, the Caserta Municipal Police, led by Commander Luigi De Simone, foiled a theft of copper cables inside the city cemetery.
The officers, having recorded traces of illegal entries in the previous days aimed at stealing electrical wires containing copper, decided to place a camera in the cemetery.
The Operations Center staff noticed, during one of the last nights, the presence of lights inside the cemetery attributable to portable batteries used by thieves.
At that point, the Municipal Police immediately organized a stakeout outside the cemetery near all the entrances, having first noted that the pedestrian entrance on Via Talamonti had been forced open and that the gate had been carefully left ajar by the thieves so as not to arouse suspicion.
From the cameras' view, there were at least six people inside. At that point, a request for reinforcements was made and two Carabinieri patrol cars on duty in the area immediately arrived on site.
The stakeouts, aimed at waiting for the arrival of the vehicle for the transport of the stolen material, and to intervene in the event of a crime, were located on all access roads and at the various entrances to the cemetery at a safe distance.
After about two hours, six people came out in single file and at high speed from the entrance on Via Talamonti, crossed the road and entered the thick vegetation of the land at the side of the road, evidently to organize the recovery of the stolen goods.
The immediate pursuit, both on foot and by the Carabinieri gazelles headed towards the entrance to the Cappuccini exit of the Anas variant, put the six subjects to flight, who then disappeared into the fields and in total darkness.
However, the Municipal Police officers managed to recover approximately three hundred meters of copper cables, evidently placed in the previous days, and a Mercedes Class A vehicle, registered to a citizen resident in the province of Caserta, which was found to be stolen and with counterfeit Romanian license plates.
The recovered goods have a value of approximately 4.000 euros and were subsequently returned to the contractor for the works inside the cemetery, following a regular report filed at the Command offices. The vehicle was delivered to its rightful owner, while the Romanian license plates were retained for investigation. The judicial authorities were promptly notified of the facts.
