The Prefect of Avellino, Paola Spena, is preparing to appoint in the next few days the commissioners who will take charge of the administration of the municipalities of Monteforte Irpino and Quindici. These appointments come following the dissolution of the respective City Councils, a decision deliberated by the Council of Ministers on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, due to alleged mafia influence.
According to reports, the commissioners, three for each municipality, will remain in office for the next eighteen months, unless extended. This drastic government decision was taken after in-depth checks and investigations conducted by the access commissions, appointed directly by the prefecture of Avellino, over the last six months.
The mayor of Monteforte, Costantino Giordano, is currently involved in a trial in which he is co-defendant together with members of the Partenio Camorra clan for crimes such as extortion aggravated by the mafia method and bid-rigging. In the case of the mayor of Quindici, Eduardo Rubinaccio, together with fourteen other suspects, the charges concern the forgery of a public document, with the fictitious attribution of residency to 116 voters who would have thus participated in the administrative elections of September 2020.
This is not the first episode of dissolution of Irpinia municipalities due to criminal infiltration. Quindici, in particular, was the scene of a thirty-year feud between the Cava and Graziano clans, which deeply affected the local community. The signature of the President of the Republic is now the last formal step to ratify the Government's decision.
