Naples. A Roma prisoner attempted to escape from Secondigliano prison this morning, but was stopped by the Penitentiary Police.
According to the Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police (SAPPE), the man had managed to climb over a wall and was trying to reach an area where he had hidden an escape rope.
“A timely and professional intervention by our agents avoided the worst,” said Raffaele 'Lello' Munno, vice regional secretary of SAPPE. The union, however, emphasizes the serious lack of personnel and asks the Department of Penitentiary Administration to reward the agents who prevented the escape.
Tiziana Guacci, regional secretary of SAPPE, denounced the critical situation of the prisons in Campania, characterized by violence against the agents and by a lack of resources.
Donato Capece, secretary general of SAPPE, defined the episode "alarming" and called for urgent action to ensure safety in prisons, including:
More staff and resources: to improve the working conditions of the agents and ensure greater surveillance.
Tech: to enhance security systems.
Training: to prepare agents to face critical situations.
More severe measures: such as solitary confinement for violent inmates and transfer to prisons far from their region.
