Salerno abuse in a facility for the elderly – An investigation by the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office has brought to light a disturbing picture of abuse towards elderly people within a care and assistance facility in the city. The Carabinieri of the NAS, supported by the Health Protection Group of Naples and the Provincial Command of Salerno, have executed an order that provides for ten personal precautionary measures, ordered by the investigating judge at the request of the Prosecutor's Office. The charges include kidnapping and mistreatment, with aggravating circumstances related to the vulnerable conditions of the victims.
Investigations revealed that elderly people were tied to wheelchairs or beds with rags and old sweaters, and some were found in urine-soaked beds or confined to using diapers. The incidents allegedly occurred at the European Institute for the Third Age, where serious structural and organizational deficiencies emerged. The facility was found to have no functioning heating or hot water, highlighting a management oriented towards maximizing profits rather than the well-being of guests.
The investigation revealed that the facility was hosting elderly people with various pathologies, some even in terminal conditions, without the necessary attention to their needs. A prominent figure, although without formal positions, emerges as the dominus of the facility, exercising significant control over these unacceptable practices. The Prosecutor's Office has initiated decisive action to shed light on this situation, underlining the urgency of protecting the rights and dignity of the most vulnerable people.
