Quinoa in Marcianise – The results of an innovative experimental quinoa cultivation project, launched in May 2022 on a plot of approximately 8.000 square meters in the Carbone area, were recently published. The initiative, promoted by the municipal administration and Councilor Giuseppe Golino, aimed to enhance the area's agricultural potential and improve the sector's competitiveness through the introduction of new crops.
The project attracted the interest of the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli," specifically the Department of Environmental, Biological, and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies. Researchers collected quinoa samples, including stems and leaves, to conduct research on the biochemical characterization of ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs). These proteins, produced by plants, play a key role in defense against insect pathogens, fungi, and viruses, as well as being implicated in responses to environmental stress.
Professor Antimo Di Maro led the investigation, highlighting a high concentration of RIPs in quinoa seeds. These proteins showed potential anti-fungal and anti-viral effects, as well as selective toxicity towards tumor cells. Although stems and leaves were also analyzed, the results indicate that the main source of RIPs in quinoa is found in the seeds, with quinoin – a highly active protein – having attracted particular interest for its potential in the biotechnology sector.

“It was a small revolution”, commented Councilor Golino, underlining how Marcianise represents a precious agricultural heritage. “The hope is that we will continue to pursue this path, collaborating between the Municipality, farmers and the University to contribute significantly to the growth of the agricultural and experimental sector”.
The quinoa project not only opened new horizons for local agriculture, but also initiated important scientific research, promoting more sustainable and organic agriculture. The availability of quinoa plants and seeds in the area marcianise It therefore represents an important step towards a more innovative and responsible agricultural future.
