Robotic Surgery in Salerno – A 12-year-old patient from the province of Avellino has faced a series of health challenges since birth, including congenital heart disease and deafness that developed following a long stay in intensive care. The boy was recently admitted to the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the San Giovanni di Dio and Ruggi d'Aragona University Hospital in Salerno. Salerno, directed by Doctor Umberto Ferrentino, due to severe abdominal pain and vomiting.
The young man had already received care in two health facilities, one abroad and one in Italy, where he had been discharged with a diagnosis of cholecystitis. However, the doctors at Ruggi faced a complication: the cochlear implant did not allow for magnetic resonance cholangiometry, a fundamental test for studying the bile ducts.
Thanks to the collaboration with radiologists, it was possible to conduct a careful ultrasound and radiographic study, which led to the definitive diagnosis: the boy's gallbladder was significantly elongated and contained formations that compressed the extrahepatic bile ducts, causing repeated cholecystitis.
With the intervention of anesthesiologists, Dr. Ferrentino and his team performed a robotic surgery, taking into account the complex medical history of the patient. During the operation, the gallbladder was removed and the bile ducts obstructed by adhesions were freed, restoring a smoother transit of the intrahepatic bile ducts.
After a delicate and successful operation, the young patient is now in excellent health and has been discharged from the hospital, bringing joy to both doctors and his family. This boy's story is an example of how medical innovation can make a difference in the life of a young patient.
