Dramatic turn of events in Naples: all defendants acquitted in the Bagnoli Futura case. The Court of Appeal of Naples has fully acquitted all defendants involved in the environmental disaster of Bagnoli Futura.
A sentence that closes a judicial chapter that lasted over a decade, marked by very serious accusations and by a public opinion deeply concerned about the fate of the former industrial area.
The defendants, including engineers, politicians and managers, were accused of causing an environmental disaster during cleanup operations, worsening an already heavily polluted site.
A heavy accusation, supported by technical expertise and an impressive amount of documents. However, the defense managed to dismantle point by point the accusation's theses, convincing the judges of the absence of concrete evidence against the defendants.
The legal proceedings date back to 2014 while the investigations began in 2007. The acquittals concern the engineer Gianfranco Caligiuri (former technical director of Bagnoli Future, defended by the lawyers Alfonso and Guido Furgiuele), the notary Sabatino Santangelo (at the time president and vice mayor of Naples, defended by the lawyer Giuseppe Fusco), the engineer Mario Hubler (general director of Bagnoli Futura, defended by professor Alfonso Furgiuele and the lawyer Luca Bancale).
Full formula also for the architect Giuseppe Pulli (at the time director of the environmental sector of the Municipality of Naples, defended by the lawyer Claudio Botti), for Alfonso De Nardo (head of the provincial department of Arpac, defended by the lawyer Loiacono).
The Court of Appeal of Naples had already acquitted all the defendants, excluding that “Bagnoli Futura” had caused a disaster with the remediation in the period from 2005 to 2013. The Supreme Court of Cassation annulled this sentence, referring to another section of the Court of Appeal of Naples the task of ascertaining, on the merits, whether the remediation had in any case worsened the situation of environmental pollution. Today, the word ends this legal proceeding that lasted about ten years.
