From bread to hope, passing through rebirth: this is the common thread of the project “The FaRinati”, an initiative involving the inmates of the prison of Nice (Caserta) in the artisanal production of sweets, Easter doves and baked goods.
An opportunity for training and redemption, presented in the Sala Caduti of Nassiriya Regional Council of Campania, the result of the collaboration between the association Free Generation, the prison management and the Regional guarantor of persons deprived of personal liberty, Samuele Ciambriello.
“If the anagram of prison is to search, then this is a concrete example of how we can create paths of awareness and skills, capable of restoring dignity and meaning to punishment”, said Ciambriello, underlining the importance of a system that offers prisoners a real chance of reintegration. “If we don’t release hope, how can we talk about reintegration?”, he added, highlighting how the initiative also contributes to “break out of the walls of indifference”.
Thanks to funding from the Fines Box, inside the prison a professional laboratory has been set up dedicated to the production of bread, pastries and large leavened products. Management is entrusted to the association Free Generation, which currently employs five inmates. “We started with two people and we are growing”, said the president of the association, Rosary Laudato. “Our products are sold both inside and outside the facility, and represent a concrete opportunity for training and work.”
A project that the company is also focusing a lot on director of the prison of carinola, Carlo Brunetti, which sees the initiative as a fundamental step towards social reintegration. "This is a real preparation for returning to society. Those who leave will bring with them not only an experience, but also a skill that can be used in the world of work. The feedback is very positive, both in terms of participation and motivation", he has declared.
The meeting was also attended by two inmates involved in the project, witnesses of a path that goes beyond detention and looks to the future with greater confidence. Also present was the Guarantor of the prisoners of Piedmont, Bruno Mellano, as a sign of a commitment that goes beyond regional borders. The event concluded with a tasting of the products made in the laboratory, a concrete taste of an initiative that demonstrates how prison can be not only a place of punishment, but also of redemption and new opportunity.

The FaRinati project seems very interesting and useful for prisoners. It is important to give them training opportunities to reintegrate into society. We hope that other prisons can follow this example and create similar initiatives.
