Naples, the hole gang dismantled: 6 arrests

In an incredible operation, the Carabinieri have dismantled a very dangerous criminal organization, the so-called 'gang of the hole', which had long terrorized Naples with a series of robberies and thefts carried out through tunnels dug under the city streets.

Six arrests and an investigation that revealed a complex network of tunnels and warehouses, used by criminals to gain undisturbed access to shops and commercial activities.

Like in a movie, the criminals, after having identified the target, entered the premises through tunnels connected to the sewer system, dug with patience and mastery. A real army of moles that, in the middle of the night, emerged from the depths of the city to carry out their heists.

Footage from surveillance cameras of a robbery at a KFC fast food restaurant in the heart of Naples has gone viral on the web, revealing the audacity and unscrupulousness of these criminals.

Thanks to an intense investigative activity, based on wiretaps, shadowing and image analysis, the Carabinieri managed to trace the identity of those responsible and to defeat theentire organization.

The targets were identified and monitored and the excavation phases were followed, which were completed thanks to the availability of storage rooms located in strategic points for access to the sewer network and connection to the city subsoil.

- the aggravated robbery committed against the Piazza Carità sales point of a well-known fast food chain, during which the associates, after having entered the sewer system and carried out prolonged excavation work in the subsoil, entered the business masked and disguised, taking possession of cash under the threat of a gun, for a total value of 8.200,00 euros;

– aggravated theft committed inside a tobacconist's, located near Piazza Bovio, during which the suspects, after having entered the premises from the basement, took possession of tobacco, stamp duty, electronic cigarettes, scratch cards and lottery tickets, for a total value of approximately 40.000,00 euros. The stolen goods were found and subjected to criminal seizure;

– the attempted aggravated robbery committed against the post office in Piazza Matteotti, planned in every detail in order to take possession of the cash transported by the Security Institute to the post offices. The criminal intent, which went as far as completing the excavation operations in the urban subsoil, was foiled only thanks to the timely intervention of personnel from the Carabinieri Company of Naples Center;

– the attempted aggravated theft committed against the bank branch of a well-known credit institution in Piazza Bovio, aimed at taking possession of the money kept inside the relative ATM. The criminal intent, which went as far as completing the excavation operations in the urban subsoil, was foiled only thanks to the timely intervention of personnel from the Carabinieri Company of Naples Center;

– the creation of a false document (electronic identity card on which false personal details and the photographic effigy of a front man were reported) used to sign the rental contract for a warehouse used as a logistics base for the storage of materials and stolen goods, as well as for access to the sewers.

Some of the recipients of the precautionary measure executed today are individuals burdened by specific precedents for predatory crimes using the “hole” technique.
