The modus operandi remains the same, but this time the scam against an elderly woman was not as successful as hoped. Two women originally from Naples were reported by the Carabinieri after attempting to defraud an 80-year-old resident of Letino, a small town in the province of Caserta, on the border with Molise.
The episode took place when the elderly woman received a phone call from a man pretending to be her nephew. The fake relative, in a worried voice, told her that he had been stopped by the police and that to avoid arrest she would have to provide him with a large sum of money, in addition to the gold and money she possessed. The 80-year-old, in a panic, was instructed by her “nephew” to prepare all the money and jewelry and wait for the arrival of two women who would collect everything.
Fortunately, the old woman, worried about what was happening, decided to call her daughter to tell her about the phone call. The daughter, very surprised, confirmed that her grandson was with her and that nothing she had said was true. At that point, the woman immediately alerted the Carabinieri.
The military personnel from the Capriati al Volturno station, who promptly intervened, arrived near the 80-year-old's home and, in collaboration with a patrol of the Carabinieri Forestale, stopped the two women, with criminal records for fraud, while they were on board a rented Dacia Sandero. The women, without identification documents, were then reported at liberty. During the check, the cell phones with which they had contacted the elderly woman were also seized.
