The number of intentional waste fires in the Terra dei Fuochi area has decreased by 9% thanks to an intense control and prevention activity started in the last five months. This is what emerges from the balance presented by the Prefecture of Naples, led by the prefect Michele di Bari. Between June and October, the number of fires dropped to 384 episodes, a significant figure that reflects a net decline in several critical areas of the metropolitan territory. This result was obtained thanks to an enhancement of prevention services and cooperation between the Police Forces, the Army and local police forces.
Article Key Points
The counteraction did not stop at field checks: there were 78 people reported and seized 55 economic activities believed to be involved in the illegal disposal of waste. The administrative sanctions imposed exceeded the 2,6 million euro, while 114 vehicles used for illegal transport and dumping were seized. Furthermore, technological support played a key role: the operations were complemented by 73 air missions carried out by military drones, useful for monitoring the most difficult to reach areas and promptly identifying new spills.
Some of the most problematic areas, such as the nomad camps of Carrafiello in Giugliano in Campania e Dark Perillo to Scampia, have been subject to intensified controls with “extended cordons”, measures that have allowed the risk areas to be monitored for long periods, limiting the possibility of new fires.
Local police forces were also able to increase their presence on the territory thanks to funding from the Ministry of the Interior, which allowed them to extend their services during the night and on holidays. This ensured greater coverage in peripheral areas and rapid monitoring of new spills, allowing for timely interventions to remove waste.
Prefect Di Bari: “Significant results, but the guard remains high”
“These data demonstrate that the coordinated work between the various forces on the territory is producing concrete results, but we cannot let our guard down,” declared the prefect Michele di Bari. The fight against fires in the Land of Fires remains a priority, with the aim of guaranteeing environmental safety and the health of citizens.

It's a good result, but it must be said that it is not enough. We need to continue to monitor and prevent, because the problems are still present in many areas. Safety must remain a priority for everyone.
Yes, I agree with you. Even though the numbers seem positive, it is important not to forget that there are many challenges ahead. We hope that the authorities will continue to do their job with commitment.
