The Zaha Hadid architecture studio has won the international design competition – announced by the Campania Region and FS Sistemi Urbani (FS Group) in synergy with the Municipality of Naples – for the Complex Intermodal Node of Napoli Garibaldi-Porta Est and the urban regeneration of the railway areas, including the new Regional Headquarters.
In addition to the winning project, the other finalists are RPA Srl, Mario Cucinella Architects Surl, Van Berkel en Bos UN Studio BV and Arup Italia Srl. The project concerns an urban area of approximately 200.000 square meters, including the former FS freight yard of Corso Lucci and the Porta Nolana area, and involves the construction of a new intermodal hub for the direct connection between the station, port and airport.
Furthermore, the project includes the headquarters of the Campania Region in the area of the former FS freight yard, the burying of the EAV tracks with the creation of a new public boulevard for green connections and public spaces to reconnect the areas with the Centro Direzionale, as well as a new road system including a motorway link to decongest the entire urban area.
The urban planning implementation plan resulting from the project will have to be submitted to the scrutiny of the Municipality of Naples, which will assess its approval. The procedure, divided into two phases and conducted anonymously, ended on January 31, 2025 with the proclamation of the winner by the Judging Committee among the five teams of participating designers.
The design competition, announced in implementation of the Program Agreement signed on 11 September 2023 between the Campania Region, the Municipality of Naples, EAV, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and FS Sistemi Urbani, saw the participation of 30 design proposals in the first phase, with five finalists admitted to the second.
With the award of the competition, the Napoli Porta Est project takes a decisive step forward for the implementation of the interventions, confirming the commitment of the FS Group to promote urban regeneration initiatives associated with increasingly sustainable mobility, in line with the provisions of the Strategic Plan 2025-2029.
