Naples – The Carabinieri of the Naples Central Company executed this morning, at the crack of dawn, a custodial order against a 59-year-old resident of the Spanish Quarter, already known to the police.
The man is accused of aggravated robbery against an 85-year-old woman, an episode that occurred last January 12 in the heart of the historic center.
The story, reconstructed by the Carabinieri Operations Unit under the direction of the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office (VII Urban Security Section), took place in the Galleria Umberto I, a stone's throw from Via Toledo.
The robbery of an 85-year-old woman on January 12th
According to the investigation, supported by video surveillance images and testimonies, the 59-year-old allegedly stalked the victim before attacking her from behind, violently snatching the bag from her shoulder and causing her to fall. The impact with the ground allegedly caused the woman a serious head injury, so much so that she needed to be hospitalized with a red code and a reserved prognosis.
After the gesture, the man allegedly dragged theelderly for a few meters, and then fled on foot through the alleys of the center. During his escape, he allegedly threatened a young passerby with a knife who was trying to stop him. The images from the cameras, combined with witness statements, allowed investigators to identify the suspect, culminating in the custody order signed by the GIP of the Court of Naples.
The arrest confirms the authorities' attention to the phenomenon of urban crime, particularly in areas with high tourist traffic.
The Prosecutor's Office has stressed the importance of coordination between judicial police and technology to ensure rapidity in investigations. Meanwhile, the victim's conditions remain serious, while the 59-year-old will have to answer to the charges in court.
