Salerno, – A sensational and dangerous act, but fortunately without consequences. Two 23-year-olds, one from Salerno and the other from Vietri sul Mare, were identified and reported for throwing a homemade explosive device in front of the door of the building that houses the Police Headquarters and the Prefecture of Salerno.
Article Key Points
The episode, which occurred yesterday evening around 23pm, is the first in the Salerno area to be classified as an attack with explosives, introduced by the 'Caivano' decree (article 421 bis of the penal code), usually applied in cases of armed raids or "stese".
The paper bomb, home-made but “highly explosive”, according to police commissioner Giancarlo Conticchio, did not explode after hitting a column. “If it had exploded,” Conticchio explained, “it could have caused harm to people.”
The device was discovered this morning by a cleaning lady who noticed a suspicious object, apparently a piece of plastic, and immediately alerted the guard. The bomb squad from Naples intervened on site and secured the device.
Rapid investigations by the Digos
Thanks to the images from the surveillance cameras and the activity of the Digos, coordinated by the Salerno Prosecutor's Office, the two alleged perpetrators were identified already in the late morning today. The young people, with no criminal record, were reported for attack and illegal possession of explosives. The police commissioner ruled out any terrorist or sports-fan related origin, defining the incident as "an extemporaneous fact".
Conticchio thanked the public prosecutor of Salerno, Giuseppe Borrelli, and the prefect Francesco Esposito for their collaboration, stressing that "we did the best we could to shed light on the incident in a short time". The investigations are continuing to clarify the reasons for the gesture, which the police commissioner defined as "a very serious episode".
