A dramatic accident has hit the mountainous region of Abisko in northern Sweden, near the border with Norway.
An avalanche swept away a helicopter that was stationary on the ground in the Kårsavagge area, involving a group of skiers and causing the death of two Italians. The episode, which occurred in the area managed by the tourist agency Niehku Mountain Villa, involved seven people, including the pilot, as reported by the Swedish media based on an official statement.
According to initial reconstructions, the helicopter had landed to allow heli-skiing activity, when a mass of snow suddenly broke away, overwhelming the vehicle and part of the group.
The agency's statement states: "A group of five Italian skiers, accompanied by an IFMGA-certified mountain guide, were on a descent in the Kårsavagge area. The avalanche swept away the guide and two of the skiers.
The two guests were buried in the snow, while the guide remained on the surface." The other people present, including the pilot, are said to have emerged unharmed from the accident.
The victims, according to what has emerged, were two Italian men aged around 50 and 45. Local authorities and rescuers intervened promptly, but there was nothing that could be done for the two skiers.
The episode reopens the debate on safety in off-piste skiing in remote areas, despite the presence of qualified professionals. Further details on the identity of the victims and the dynamics of the accident are expected in the coming hours.
