Pozzuoli – A new seismic swarm hit the Campi Flegrei area in the early hours of this morning, Sunday 20 April.
The Vesuvius Observatory announced the news by recording the start of seismic activity at 03:53 (local time) with a sequence of approximately twenty seismic events.
The two strongest earthquakes reached a magnitude of Md 1.8 and Md 1.6. The epicenters were located in the area between Solfatara, Monte Olibano and Pisciarelli, areas already known for their intense geothermal activity.
According to the seismologists, the arrangement of the hypocenters at decreasing depths and the rapid dynamics of the events suggest an activity linked to the rise of gas through the fractures in the subsoil, a phenomenon compatible with the bradyseismic nature of the area.
The phenomenon, for now, has had a limited duration and no damage or further significant tremors have been recorded. However, the area remains under close monitoring by scientific bodies and the Civil protection.
The mayor of Pozzuoli, Gigi Manzoni, has released an official note to reassure citizens:
"The Vesuvius Observatory has communicated to this administration that, starting from 03:53, a seismic swarm is underway in the Campi Flegrei area. The Municipal Administration, together with the Civil Protection, is closely following the evolution of the situation and will provide updates until the end of the phenomenon".
The episode is part of the bradyseismic crisis in progress in Campi Flegrei, which has been recording frequent low-magnitude seismic activity for months. The population is invited to stay informed through official channels and not to spread unverified news.

It is important to know that earthquakes, even if they are low magnitude, can be dangerous. I wonder if there are evacuation plans or other safety measures for the population living in these areas, which is increasingly at risk.
