She knocked on the door of an 80-year-old pensioner pretending to be a policeman and convinced her to hand over money and jewelry to "save" her brother from an arrest that never happened. Now that young woman, a 21-year-old from Afragola, has ended up under house arrest on charges of aggravated fraud. The order was issued by the investigating judge of Caltanissetta and carried out by the Carabinieri of the San Cataldo branch, at the end of an investigation coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office.
The scam, which dates back to last year, is part of the well-known technique of the “false carabiniere”: a serious accident is staged, the victim is called pretending to be a public official and cash or valuables are requested to avoid legal trouble for a relative. So the elderly woman, scared, gave the young scammer 8 thousand euros in cash and jewelry.
The investigation began immediately after the victim's complaint. The footage from the area's video surveillance cameras was essential in tracing the 21-year-old's identity, as it allowed them to collect useful evidence, including the details of the rental car in which the woman had left the scene.
