Pompeii. The Living City is a podcast produced by Piano P, an Italian platform for journalistic podcasts, for the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, in collaboration with Electa, on the occasion of the upcoming reopening to the public of the Antiquarium of Pompeii.
Six episodes, hosted by Carlo Annese, in which twenty-six academics, archaeologists, artists and writers, together with the director Massimo Osanna, tell the story and evolution of one of the greatest riches of the Italian heritage: from the tragic eruption of Vesuvius that in 79 AD caused an entire city to disappear under a blanket of ash and lapilli to the chance discovery that started the excavations in 1748, up to the latest extraordinary relaunch of the Archaeological Park.

Valeria Parrella, Pappi Corsicato, Catharine Edwards, Maurizio De Giovanni, Andrea Marcolongo and many others contribute to reconstructing the daily life, arts and customs of the ancient city – from food to eroticism, from the architecture of the domus to the gardens – putting them in relation to our times.
Together with Cesare De Seta and Anna Ottani Cavina they analyze the influence that Pompeii has had on the culture of the last three centuries, from the Enlightenment thought on the catastrophe to the fascination of the romantic travelers of the Grand Tour to the best-sellers on the last days before the tragedy. And with Maria Pace Ottieri they discover countless points of contact with today's reality, starting with the risk run by the 700.000 inhabitants of the seven municipalities of the Vesuvian area. "Those ruins tell us that we are substantially the same," says the popular Neapolitan writer Maurizio De Giovanni. "That city, with its markets and its houses, with its division between a commercial bourgeoisie and the popular suburbs, traces in the exact same way what the city would be today, if it were photographed in a similar situation. And we hope that never happens."
The series includes 6 episodes, with a weekly release starting January 8, 2021. The episodes will be available for listening on Spotify, Spreaker, Apple Podcasts and all the main free apps for listening to Podcasts.
