376 days have passed since Mario's death Paciolla, the United Nations aid worker who lost his life in his home in San Vicente del Cagua'n, where he was working as an observer to ensure compliance with the peace agreements in Colombia.
After more than a year, the story is still shrouded in great mystery. The Colombian police and the UN have spoken of a suicide, but those seeking truth have never been convinced by this first version, especially the parents of the 33-year-old Neapolitan, who say they are certain that their son was killed, as he knew that territory well, as demonstrated by the articles written for some geopolitical magazines, under the pseudonym of Astolfo Bergman.
“The prosecution is maintaining the strictest confidentiality on the investigations, so we know nothing about what happened”, says the mother, Anna Motta, who with her husband Giuseppe continues to ask for truth and justice, also on the occasion of the initiative organized for the first anniversary of his death. Even the family's lawyers prefer silence, waiting for the matter to be clarified.
In the meantime, in these months, the institutions, various associations and many exponents of culture and entertainment have concretely shown their closeness to the family. Among these there is also Roberto Saviano, which in a message sent to parents defines Mario Paciolla “a creator of the future” and asks that Anna and Giuseppe not be left alone.
“Understanding what happened to Mario – writes Saviano – helps us understand what happened and is happening here, in the territories where the only welfare is criminal welfare”. The many testimonies of affection have moved Pope Giuseppe, who says he is determined to fight to shed light on what happened.
“Mario’s joy and his commitment survive in the closeness and testimony of so many people – he underlines – many of whom we didn’t know, we found next to us, as if they were a sea of children”. Meanwhile, at the end of May, during the hearing of the Committee for Human Rights in the World, which addressed the situation in Colombia, a request was made to file a parliamentary question to push the Government to take a position on the case.
The Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, urged the collaboration of the Colombian authorities and assured the Executive's attention on the matter. As did Roberto Fico, who reiterated the State's commitment. “We will not stop, we will go as far as things are discovered”, the President of the Chamber had said during an event organized in Naples by a group of citizens at the end of July last year.
