An emergency response team in case of accidental hydrocarbon spills. Anti-pollution booms to contain oily liquids and protect the bodies of water near the docks from small spills from boats. An agreement was signed this morning between the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area and ISPRA (Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research).
The agreement will allow the Marine Protected Area to equip itself with the tools and skills needed in cases of marine pollution due to hydrocarbons. The initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, will involve 10 other MPAs. It will be developed through a course that will prepare to act and coordinate the first intervention activities in the event of environmental emergencies at sea.
We will move from theory to practice, with possible exercises at sea. Chemical-physical characteristics of hydrocarbons and their behavior at sea; prevention, containment and strategies for removing the polluting agent; effects on habitats and organisms and assessment of the state of the sea, from the seabed to the surface. These are just some of the topics at the center of the course that will be organized by highly specialized personnel of Ispra.
"I signed this agreement with great conviction. We want to be a point of reference for the entire coastal territory, in order to coordinate containment and removal interventions in cases of unpleasant and accidental phenomena of marine pollution by hydrocarbons - underlines Lucio Cacace, President of Amp Punta Campanella - The agreement with Ispra, moreover, will allow us to acquire anti-pollution booms. They are floating instruments capable of containing the expansion of oily liquids in the sea.
During the winter we will have the opportunity to evaluate how to best exploit the skills acquired: our goal is to improve bathing on the beaches adjacent to docking piers and port areas".
