Carcere di Poggioreale: today's news is of a transfer to the Neapolitan prison of Poggioreale of a inmate di 250 chili, first confined in the county jail of Lecce, at the disposal of the Department of Penitentiary Administration.
“I don't understand the logic of this transfer – declares the Campania guarantor of prisoners Samuele Ciambriello -. It is already inconceivable to me that Francesco, a 48-year-old man who weighs 250 kilos, has several fractures, is a heart patient and has already had four heart attacks, is still in prison and not in house arrest in a health facility or hospital. Even more unacceptable is that he is now in a penal institution like Poggioreale”.
Francesco's case is added to other cases, first of all that of Mario, the 270-kilo man who from Poggioreale, just a few days ago, was sent to house arrest. “Too many sick people, elderly people, prisoners with psychiatric disorders who fill our prisons. For them – adds Ciambriello – different solutions, alternative measures should be thought of, also because there is a lack of doctors in the prisons of Campania, both general practitioners and specialists, nurses, psychiatrists and psychologists. The State cannot remain inert in the face of stories like those of Francesco, who deserves to serve his sentence in a dignified manner and above all having the necessary care and not far from home, from his family, knowing, for example, that the Bari prison has a well-equipped Sai department and is already connected to the local hospital and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bari. The prison facilities, like Poggioreale, cannot take on such a delicate clinical case. The risk is too high”.
