This is the letter from Dario Vassallo
«Dear friends, members and activists of the Democratic Party,
my candidacy in the next political elections among the ranks of the 5 Star Movement is an obligatory and carefully decided step.
My choice was driven by the belief that the murder of Angelo, the fisherman Mayor of Pollica is based on two big responsibilities.
A criminal Camorra responsibility, and a political responsibility, the latter at the moment only moral, but the "cards" and the facts predict another form of sad involvement.
I am running against this local politics, Salerno and Cilento, which has hindered Angelo during his administrative life, and has placed obstacles in our search for the truth after his killing, with arrogant and conceited actions that belong to other worlds, not to Politics and not to the culture of the Democratic Party.
In politics the word betrayal is not used, or at least it is used very little. Therefore with this choice of mine I reiterate the concept that I have not betrayed the trust and friendship of many administrators of the Democratic Party who have named important things in their territories after Angelo Vassallo, such as the Council Chamber in Sant'Agata Bolognese. I have not betrayed those who named a floating dock in port of Cetraro (Cosenza)), I have not betrayed those who named a garden after Anzola dell'Emilia. These administrators belong to that Party to which Mayor Pescatore was a member and who always welcomed me into the town hall with love and respect.
My candidacy is against that part of the Democratic Party, which rages in the territories south of Salerno generating a system of widespread power and control of public affairs, managed not by ability and intelligence, but by political affiliation to the families of the Gulf of Salerno, thus generating over time the Cilento System, which has harnessed the territories in a feudal political and administrative life condition, where the right is sold for political pleasure, transforming the management action into something "different" and very dangerous for Democracy and for the Democratic Party itself.
I reported this system to the Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office of Salerno in 2018. Therefore, my candidacy for the Chamber of Deputies in the ranks of the 5 Star Movement is not against those who opened the doors of their homes to me, the doors of the sections of the Democratic Party, but exclusively against those who turned the hands of time back to the Middle Ages.
My last name is Vassallo, but I do not live in that time, and I have never been a vassal of anyone, indeed my candidacy is against the master.
I started this electoral campaign starting from the eyes of two people that I had the honor of knowing in the Bolognese lands, and that I have never forgotten, despite the passing of time: Isolina Turrini, partisan courier, and Nerio Cocchi "Violet" militant of the Seventh GAP Brigade (Partisan Action Group).
When he asked me about Angelo, I saw two tears running down Nerio's face.
They are the eyes of the history of this land, and of this party.
These eyes are the Democratic Party. Eyes like Nerio's, like Angelo's.
These are the tears of suffering and pain, which have united us and which no one will ever be able to divide.
The rest is something else and does not belong to my or your hard and painful experience.
