Ariano Irpino, landfill seized with waste products from an oil mill. The transporter stopped by the finance police was working illegally
The finance police of the Provincial Command of Avellino have identified and seized, in recent days, an area of approximately 20.000 square meters, in Ariano Irpino, where waste products from an Ariano oil mill had been dumped.
The immediate investigations carried out allowed, in particular, the military personnel of the dependent Ariano Irpino Company to identify the oil mill in question, with headquarters in Ariano Irpino, and the transporter of the material, resident in Ariano, who, among other things, did not have an employment contract.
From the inspection of the site it was possible to ascertain a large quantity of sewage formed by vegetation water and pomace, coming from the processing of olives, which were being poured in an uncontrolled manner on the ground, also representing damage for the underlying aquifers.
The large quantity of waste found on the ground was probably the result of the accumulation, in a completely uncontrolled manner, which occurred during this first period of olive milling.
In order to contain the risk of pollution and avoid it being brought to further consequences, the financial police proceeded with the seizure of the entire area, in order to activate the procedures at the relevant bodies and allow for its subsequent remediation; at the same time, they reported to the Sannio judicial authorities the driver of the vehicle used for the spill, caught during the act of illegally disposing of the product, for the hypothesis of unauthorized waste management activity.
The activity once again demonstrates the transversal action of the Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza of Avellino, which is committed to protecting the environment and the health of citizens, since the illegal dumping of waste in unauthorized places, in addition to seriously defacing the territory by causing irreparable contamination of the subsoil with serious consequences for public health, constitutes a practice of unfair competition towards economic operators who correctly bear the costs related to the regular disposal of waste in authorized landfills.
