Sappe reports yet another episode of violence in prisons which occurred in the early afternoon inside the prison of Salerno. “Some inmates came to blows while they were in the lawyers’ room of the prison,” explains Tiziana Guacci, regional secretary of the Campania Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police.
"Among other things present - he adds - were three lawyers and two prisoners who, due to meeting bans, were having interviews with their families. In an instant everything happened, and the one who got the worst of it was a prison policeman, who was injured after intervening to separate them. All the solidarity of Sappe goes to him, even in the awareness that it cannot and must not always and only be the prison police (who provide service without any means of defense useful for guaranteeing physical safety) who pay for the constant and indeed growing prison tensions".
Donato Capece, general secretary of Sappe expresses closeness and solidarity to the police officers of Salerno: "Once again the prison police officers of Campania are forced to live, against their will and on their own skin, the violence of some inmates. This is no longer tolerable and acceptable and confirms what Sappe has been saying for some time, that is, how important and urgent it is to provide a new custodial model as soon as possible".
“For some time now – continues the leader of the Sappe – the Sappe has been denouncing how there are too many and unacceptable critical events against officers on duty. For some time now we have been denouncing that the prisoners are now the masters, thanks to an indiscriminate opening of the cells and the absence of tools to protect the physical safety of the staff”. “This is the unacceptable daily scenario in which the Penitentiary Police force operates, but it does not seem to make the news unlike other things. So much for security!”, concludes Capece, who renews his hope of being able to meet the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, soon.
