NAPLES – The demolition operations of the Yellow Sail in the district of Scampia, marking a fundamental step in the redevelopment process of the area: the announcement was made by mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, which defined the day “a historic moment”.
“The demolition of the first of the two remaining Vele has begun and, at the same time, construction work has begun on the new buildings”, declared the mayor, underlining the importance of restoring housing dignity to residents. "When I took office, I found housing situations unworthy of a civilized country. I believe that democracy is defended by guaranteeing equal dignity to all."
In his speech, Manfredi he wanted to remember the three people who lost their lives in the collapse that occurred inside the Vela last summer: “All tragedies leave a great pain. Our commitment was to honor those victims, after years of unfulfilled promises. My thoughts go out to them.” In parallel with the demolition of the Vele, the mayor explained, the construction of new homes for the families involved in the urban redevelopment plan is underway: “It is not enough to tear down, we need to rebuild”, concluded Manfredi.

This is news that gives hope for a better future for Scampia, but I hope that the promises of reconstruction are not just words. Residents deserve a dignified and safe environment, not more tragedies like those of the past.
