Life sentence confirmed by the Supreme Court for Francesco Schiavone 'Cicciariello', historic boss of the Casalesi clan and cousin of the same name of the head of the gang Francesco Schiavone known as “Sandokan”.
Cicciariello was accused of the murder of Giovanni Parente, the owner of a funeral home who was killed in September 1996 in Santa Maria la Fossa because he opposed the clan's monopoly on funerals, or the so-called "dearly deceased" racket.
In practice, Parente did not want to leave a funeral to a competing company close to the Casalesi, and for this reason the clan decided to eliminate him. The Court of Cassation confirmed the life sentence inflicted on Cicciariello by the Court of Assizes of Appeal of Naples in October 2022, which instead overturned the acquittal ordered in the first instance by the court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere.
It has emerged that the crime was ordered by Sandokan and Cicciariello, and the proof is in a note, never found, that Sandokan – also sentenced to life imprisonment on appeal – sent to his cousin in which he reiterated the problems that were emerging in the Lower Volturno, an area controlled by Cicciariello, particularly in the funeral sector.
