The Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police (SAPPE) reports an ungovernable situation in the prison of carinola, in the Caserta area.
In the last few hours, inmates have repeatedly resisted cell searches by Penitentiary Police personnel, attacking them with sticks, tables and gas canisters.
In particular, on Sunday evening a prisoner with psychiatric problems refused to return to his cell after a visit to the infirmary, blocking the police officers and threatening to kill them.
On Monday morning, inmates in a cell refused to leave for the search, verbally attacking the officers. Only with the arrival of reinforcements was it possible to carry out the search.
On Tuesday morning, the inmates banded together and attacked the officers with sticks made from the legs of the table. They also punctured gas canisters and threatened to set the officers on fire, injuring them.
SAPPE reports that the prison management is absent and that it is not even possible to transfer violent prisoners.
“We have reached the point of absurdity: now at carinola it has become impossible even to carry out a search. The prison management is totally absent. A few days ago, after a nightmare night, the dismantling colleagues asked to speak to the director, who refused, saying that he had other commitments.
Today we are at more than 500 inmates, of which at least 200 transferred from another institution for order and security, and we can't even get those inmates who attack the police to leave. The numbers of security, or rather of police personnel, are alarming: there are 70 units on duty in the morning, 15 in the afternoon and 12 at night.
Enough! We are the ones who can no longer stand this situation of widespread illegality: we are the ones who have to ask ourselves where the State is?”. From here, the request for Donato Capece to the Undersecretary of Justice Delmasteror for him to go personally to the prison named after Giovanni Battista Novelli, in the Caserta area: “because here we need a strong and evident presence of the State, which cannot tolerate this widespread impunity, and urgent and effective measures are needed!”.
