A three-day-old newborn, Antonio, died at the Monaldi hospital in Napoli after two hospitalizations. The parents, shocked by the tragedy, filed a complaint and the Torre Annunziata Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation for manslaughter against unknown persons.
Article Key Points
Antonio, son of a young couple of Greek's tower, was born by caesarean section at the private clinic Villa Stabia in Castellammare di Stabia without apparent complications.
A few hours after birth, – as reported by Il Mattino – the newborn began to experience high fever and other worrying symptoms.
The clinic's doctors arranged for the transfer to the nearby San Leonardo hospital in Castellammare di Stabia, which has a neonatal intensive care unit.
However, Antonio's conditions rapidly worsened, requiring another emergency transfer to the Monaldi hospital in Naples.
Unfortunately, despite attempts to resuscitate him, little Antonio died shortly after arriving at Monaldi.
The parents filed a complaint to seek justice and to know the reasons for the death of their little boy. The autopsy will clarify the causes of death, which at the moment are thought to be due to a virus contracted immediately after birth.
The Torre Annunziata Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating to ascertain any liability on the part of the medical staff who treated the newborn.
It is not excluded that in the next few days names may be entered in the register of suspects, with notices of investigation to allow the appointment of expert consultants and the defense at the autopsy.
Parents' pain
Antonio's parents are understandably devastated by the loss of their son.
The investigation will have to shed light on what happened and clarify whether there was negligence on the part of the medical staff.
