A new episode of violence in the women's prison of Salerno. This morning, a female prisoner with serious psychiatric disorders attempted suicide in the women's ward.
The immediate intervention of two prison officers averted the worst, but the situation degenerated into a violent brawl between the inmates.
In an attempt to quell the fight and provide assistance to the inmate in crisis, the two officers suffered several bruises, so much so that they had to be transported to the emergency room and received a prognosis of seven days each.
Despite their injuries, the prison officers showed commendable courage, continuing to carry out their duties until the end of their shift.
The episode raises once again the age-old question of the management of inmates with psychiatric problems within Italian prisons.
According to Gina Rescigno, deputy general secretary of the Union Penitentiary Police, “the presence of subjects with mental disorders in unsuitable departments destabilizes the entire system and puts the safety of both inmates and staff at risk”.
The union has long been calling for an increase in psychiatric services in prisons and a reorganization of departments, in order to ensure adequate treatment for prisoners with special needs and protect the safety of prison officers.
