Renowned weightlifter Antonino Pizzolato is currently on trial in Trapani on charges of aggravated gang rape. The athlete, who recently won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, is being held alongside three other defendants. The legal proceedings began on February 5th, although news of the indictment only recently emerged.
Sexual assault charge
The accusation concerns an episode dating back to July 2022 in Trapani. The alleged victim, a young Finnish woman, allegedly met the accused in a restaurant, along with two friends. After the evening spent in a club on the beach, the girl allegedly went to the residence of one of the accused, where she claims to have been attacked while she was sleeping.
Position of the Italian Weightlifting Federation
The Italian Weightlifting Federation (FIPE) expressed its respect for the work of the judiciary through an official note. FIPE is committed to collaborating by providing all necessary information to the investigative subjects. The Federation reiterated its trust in the judicial bodies, hoping that the investigations will lead to truth and justice.
Athlete Nino Pizzolato has a previous ten-month suspension from FIPE in 2018 for inappropriate behavior toward young athletes. The current issue casts a further shadow over his already controversial career.
