A tragedy turned into an act of immense generosity: a 62-year-old woman dies of a cerebral hemorrhage and saves 3 lives by donating her organs.
The woman was hospitalized at the Clinica “Pineta Grande” in Castel Volturno and suffered from a massive cerebral hemorrhage. Thanks to the consent of her family, however, her organs were able to save three patients waiting for transplants in the Campania region.
After the brain death was confirmed, performed by a commission from the ASL of Caserta chaired by Dr. Amedeo Blasotti and composed of Drs. Federica Colella, Elisabetta Manzi and Rosa Tonziello, together with the neurophysiopathology technician Giuseppe D'Amico, the patient's liver, kidneys and corneas were removed.
The delicate operation was coordinated by Dr. Ugo De Crescenzo, head of the clinic, with the support of the Health Directorate of the ASL of Caserta led by Dr. Saverio Misso.
The ASL of Caserta confirms itself as a reality of excellence in organ donation, placing itself in second place in Campania for the number of withdrawals carried out, immediately after the Cardarelli Hospital in Naples. Only recently, other sampling interventions had been conducted at the hospitals of Sessa Aurunca and Aversa, highlighting an exemplary synergy between the accredited health facilities and the local public body.
