The Totò Theater is ready to host one of the most iconic performances of Neapolitan theater, with “Lacreme Napulitane”, staged by Francesco Merola and Marianna Mercurio.
The opera, a famous drama based on the 1925 song by Libero Bovio and Francesco Buongiovanni, will be on stage from Friday 17 January until 26 January, directed by Gaetano Liguori.
A Dip into Tradition
Originally performed by Gennaro Pasquariello and then made famous in the 70s and 80s by Mario Merola, this skit was adapted by Nino D'Angelo. The current staging aims to bring the story closer to everyday reality, avoiding stereotypes and exaggerated emphasis. The character of the "malamente" is presented as a normal businessman involved in an overwhelming, but at the same time, very real passion.
Between Modernity and Tradition
Director Liguori explained in his notes that the show uses a modern and updated language. Music plays a key role, with pieces by Henry Mancini, Chris Botti and Lino Cannavacciuolo that accompany the emotions of the protagonists, creating a suggestive effect that breaks away from the traditional melodies of the sceneggiata.
The Cast and Production
In addition to the protagonists Francesco Merola and Marianna Mercurio, the cast includes actors such as Antoine, Adele Pandolfi and Sasà Trapanese, with the scenes curated by Massimiliano Pinto and the costumes by Anna Giordano. The production makes use of a mix of experienced and young talents, promising a fusion of experience and freshness. “Lacreme Napulitane” will therefore be the protagonist at the Teatro Totò, an event that intends to reawaken the passions and traditions of Neapolitan theater through a renewed and engaging scenic experience.
