Aversa – Late yesterday evening, a prison police officer on duty at the Aversa prison was violently attacked by a prisoner of Moroccan origin.
The incident occurred as the officer attempted to calm the inmate's aggressive behavior, which was creating tension between staff and other inmates.
The policeman was immediately taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a contusion and a sprain to his right wrist, as well as a contusion to his right leg. The prognosis is 12 days.
The regional secretary of OSAPP, Vincenzo Palmieri, made the incident known, highlighting that a union letter was sent today to the heads of PRAP Campania and to the DAP. The letter denounces the overcrowding of the Aversa prison, which exceeds the regulatory capacity by 30%, and requests the urgent transfer of inmates and prisoners who are difficult to manage, such as the perpetrator of the attack.
Palmieri stressed that the Aversa facility, designed for advanced treatment, is not suitable for housing inmates who require placement in ATSM or REMS facilities.
He also reiterated the union's commitment to urging the administration and the government to review the policies on the execution of the sentence, linking benefits to merit and compliance with the rules, fundamental elements to guarantee treatment and safety. A wish for a speedy recovery was expressed to the assaulted colleague.
