Naples – There have already been 117 road accidents recorded in Napoli in the first two months of 2024, with a toll of 3 victims. A figure that fits into an alarming context, considering that in 2023 there were 4.723 accidents, with 33 deaths.
These are the figures that emerged from the report on road accidents in the ten city municipalities, presented today to the Infrastructure and Mobility Commission of the Naples City Council by President Nino Simeone.
The document, which analyses data from 2023 and the first months of 2024, highlights a slight decline in the total number of accidents compared to the previous year: 4.703 accidents in 2023, with 34 deaths, compared to 4.723 in 2022. However, the picture remains worrying, especially in some areas of the city.
The most affected municipalities
The Fourth Municipality (San Lorenzo, Vicaria, Poggioreale, Zona Industriale) is confirmed as the area with the highest number of accidents: 849 in 2023, slightly down from 853 in 2022. In second place is the First Municipality (Chiaia, Posillipo, San Ferdinando), which records an increase in accidents, going from 576 to 596.
The Second Municipality (Avvocata, Montecalvario, Mercato, Pendino, Porto, San Giuseppe) instead saw a decrease in accidents, from 627 to 558, but the number of deaths dropped from 7 to 3. The situation in the Eighth Municipality (Chiaiano, Marianella, Piscinola, Scampia) is worrying, where accidents decreased from 317 to 302, but the deaths went from 0 to 5. Finally, the Tenth Municipality (Bagnoli, Fuorigrotta) recorded 447 accidents, down from 458 in 2022, but with 2 confirmed victims.
The most dangerous roads
Among the city arteries with the highest accident rates are Corso Garibaldi (Municipality 4), Via Manzoni (Municipality 1), Corso Vittorio Emanuele (Municipality 2), Via delle Repubbliche Marinare (Municipality 6) and Viale Kennedy (Municipality 10). For these streets, the report foresees urgent interventions, including the remaking of horizontal and vertical road signs, the improvement of public lighting, the introduction or strengthening of speed control devices and greater surveillance during peak traffic time slots.
Proposals to improve safety
The president of the commission, Nino Simeone, stressed the need for a concrete action plan to reduce the number of accidents. “The data requires us to act promptly,” he said. “A joint effort between institutions, law enforcement and citizens is needed to make the roads safer.”
Among the proposals put forward, in addition to structural interventions, there is also the idea of promoting awareness campaigns on responsible driving and of strengthening controls on the main city streets.
Meanwhile, the balance of the first two months of 2024 leaves little room for optimism: 117 accidents and 3 deaths are a warning that requires urgent reflection on road safety in Naples.

It is worrying to see that there are already 117 road accidents in the first two months of 2024 alone, and with 3 victims. We hope that the authorities will take effective measures to improve safety on the roads of Naples.
